Urogynecology is a sub-specialty in Gynecology, also known as Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. A urogynecologist manages clinical problems associated with dysfunction of the pelvic floor and bladder. The clinical conditions that are addressed include stress incontinence, overactive bladder, voiding difficulty, bladder pain, urethral pain, vaginal or uterine prolapse, obstructed defecation, anal incontinence, and perineal injury, besides vesicovaginal, urethrovaginal and rectovaginal fistulae.

Contemporary urogynecological practice encourages multidisciplinary teamwork, collaborating inputs from urogynecologists, urologists, colorectal surgeons and physiotherapists.

Urogynecological problems are seldom life-threatening, but they do have a major impact on the quality of life of affected individuals.
These problems are grossly underreported because of poorly understood pathogenesis, the variability of symptom presentation and suboptimal patient-physician communication.
